Your motorcycle journey commences in Luang Prabang as you head up north toward Nong Khiaw on extensive dirt and asphalt roads. This is a thrilling ride into the countryside with scenic landscapes. You will get to visit the Pak Ou caves, a historically important site for Buddhism. There are more than a hundred tiny statues in this cave of the Buddha deity. The various Buddha sculptures are in positions of meditation, teaching, peace, rain, and reclining. After the caves, you will ride out on your motorcycle toward Ban Nagnan to observe the continued tradition of silk weaving and silk dying from natural materials. Your night consists of an authentic home stay with a local individual in Ban Nagnan, where you will enjoy freshly cooked Lao food and have a deeper understanding of their unique way of life. If you are not interested in the home stay experience, we can accommodate you in a nearby guest house in Nong Khiaw.

The next day you will head back to Luang Prabang via Viang Kham town, where you will turn onto a dirt road and ride over some dramatic mountain ridges,  eventually dropping down to Paxeng to ride along the Nam Ou river where you’ll experience more beautiful views while riding through lovely rural villages. The Nam Ou is one of the most important rivers in Laos because it is the only channel that runs from northernmost province of Phongsaly to Luang Prabang. You will pass by open farmlands and plantations on your journey through villages back to Luang Prabang.

Full Itinerary

Your motorcycle tour will begin in Luang Prabang before crossing the mighty Mekong by ferry. You will immediately be greeted by a long stretch of winding dirt roads in the Lao countryside with mountains in all directions. At various local villages along the way, you will be able to meet both Khmu and Hmong ethnic groups. Laos is an extremely diverse country with 49 different ethnic groups. You may even pick up a few words in their distinctive languages. After you enjoying a traditional Lao meal in one of the local villages, you will journey back through Luang Prabang on your way to an elephant camp near the Nam Khan River. At the elephant camp, you will be able to ride, bathe, feed, and befriend these big elephants! In the afternoon you will head to the Hillside Resort up in the Xiengmuark hills right outside of Luang Prabang. This is a private retreat amid a lush, tropical jungle.

The next day of this adventure, you ride on a winding paved road out of Luang Prabang towards Muang Nan. You will ride through truly stunning landscapes and stop for a cool break at the beautiful Kamcham waterfall along the way.Once at Muang Nan you will experience a traditional Lao lunch at one of the many Lao roadside restaurants and be able to interact with the local people. You will leave Muang Nan for Luang Prabang by riding about 60km along the mighty Mekong River on one of two dirt roads, depending on your riding skills.

  • The “lower” road is a pleasant windy dirt road that follows close to the Mekong River and has a few small river crossings. This ride is suitable for both beginners and intermediate riders.
  • If you are a bit more experienced we will take the “upper” road, which is slightly inland from the Mekong River and requires a bit more riding skill. This road incorporates more track riding and has a few tricky sections with more hill climbs and descents which call for more technical riding skills.

With both rides you will pass through different rural villages and get to see how the rural Lao people live. The landscapes are very beautiful with the road passing through teak tree plantations and farmlands. Before returning to Luang Prabang you will get to visit the stunningly beautiful Kuang Si Waterfalls and even take a dip in the refreshing turquoise water. You will also have the opportunity to see and learn about the endangered Asian Bears at the Free the Bear sanctuary.
