Make sure you bring long sleeve shirts with you to protect against the strong sunshine. If you have gear with you, a pair of biking pants or army trousers is also recommended as protection from scratches. We encourage every bike rider in Laos to stick to the highest security levels, even for small things, so please do not ride in shorts only.
Depending on your level of riding experience and the level of your tour booked, we recommend a full body-armour suit for additional protection. Please also see out website for the motor bike equipment that we give out to our riders.
If you travel through Asia and just want to take the adventure of a motorbike ride through Laos, we take care of all the gear to be ready and provided for you.
3. CAN I MAKE A SIMPLE DAY RIDE OR EVENTUALLY A MULTIPLE WEEKS TOUR?
If you want to go for only one day or complete 2 weeks discovery riding in Laos, you’ve come to the right place. We set all tours up on request and also help you find the right area to ride, suitable always to your standard of experience.
4. DO YOU HAVE ACCOMMODATION INCLUDED?
We sure do! We can get you from local remote Homestay to some amazing hotels which are coming up even in superbly remote areas of Laos. If you already have accommodation standard in mind, you’re definitely going to want to let us know. We will adjust your tour to your wishes and preferred hotel standards.
5. HOW FLEXIBLE ARE YOU WITH THE ITINERARY?
We’re completely flexible, at least before you start riding. Our goal is to make your time in riding a bike in Laos as epic as possible. Send us any special requests that you have and we’ll make sure you got what you are looking for. Once settled with a booking, we normally have to maintain the schedule and run the tour like this. Mostly this is about the hotels which are booked in advance to make sure we have a room. If we cancel, we still have to pay…but in the end, you can take some decisions still along the way.
6. HOW MUCH DOES A MOTORBIKE TOUR IN LAOS COST?
Of course this is the question everyone is asking,…what does a motor bike tour in Laos cost. Answer is, it depends. Our tours offered range from 1-15 days length, and much depends on length of trails, daily visits and so on. Each element this makes a difference in price. Add another 4×4 support vehicle, or even non-riders in a minivan, exchange standard hotels to luxury version…it all effects your price in the end.
Our all inclusive Laos motor bike package tours are going for US$ 150-230,- per day on full services, always depending on the number of riders. Example, with a 3 day tour around Luang Prabang with 2 riders we will charge you about 600 USD / person (plus minus…)
Most people choose full service packages to ride a motor bike through Laos, as you can simply concentrate on the fun of riding and not about getting all things around sorted out. With these packages you won’t have to worry about any of the planning, logistics, or hassles that come with traveling in remote areas…
7. WHERE DO YOU NORMALLY DRIVE TO?
We usually start our tours from Luang Prabang, this is where Offroad Laos is based at. We have specifically chosen this location versus being in the capital city, as riding a motor bike out of Luang Prabang allows you to arrive in rural Laos after only 10 minutes riding. From Luang Prabang, just get on the bike and you can already feel the mountain country atmosphere of Laos.
Best selling tours are hitting the remote areas of Plain of Jars, the hidden war caves of Viengxay and the winding roads through the Phongsali province and over to Bokeo, where hilltribes still live their way of life. Our team will provide you with a sample itinerary on request.
As our tours going most in remote village areas of North Laos, we recommend starting from here, but if you want to get started in Houay Xai on the Thai border or even in Vientiane, we can make that happen too. Again, send us any special requests that you have and we’ll get right on it.
8. WHERE WILL I STAY ON A LAO MOTO TOUR?
On a motor bike tour through Laos the place to sleep is always an important aspect. A tiring riding day needs to be rewarded. Wherever possible we book comfortable en-suite hotels with air conditioning and hot water showers. In Luang Prabang you can even choose luxury hotels of a world class…
Though, once we hit the remote areas where hotels are unavailable we use clean, welcoming and friendly village homes and guesthouses.
For some of the tougher riders out there we even provide an experience in the jungle or in a hammock. Just let us know what you are up for…
9. HOW DO I CARRY MY STUFF?
A small 30-40l day pack is really best for most of out bike trips through Laos. Think about a waterproof cover to protect it from dust and rain, it’s almost a must. Bring just enough stuff to cover you for the riding days, 2 sets and 2 sets for afternoon, evening or leisure time. That is enough for most of our tours. You have to carry things by yourself, unless you book a support vehicle for your moto tour. If we have 2 nights in one place, you can use the laundry service anywhere we stay, your guide will arrange this for you.
Most riders bring a CamelBag or similar to stay hydrated and also bring some electrolyte powder to be used on the water, sometimes simply for the taste.
We can provide you with Dry bags if you like, but you can also buy those in Luang Prabang or Vientiane before your trip.
10. CAN I LEAVE OTHER LUGGAGE WITH YOU?
Sure, any bags you want to leave at our office, we store for free for you. Even on one-way rides through Laos, we can send luggage to your ending destination. For example, from Luang Prabang to Vientiane or any other location in Laos. The luggage transfers though will cost some money.
11. I HAVE FIXED DATES, BUT CANNOT FIND TOUR DEPARTURES?
Offroad Laos is a specialist on tailor-made motorbike tours. Most of our requests come from couples, friends or clubs riding bikes through Laos. If you want to join a tour, please ask for so called open dates. If you are 2 people but want to ride with others, we can offer the trip and date on the website for others to join in.
12. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO DRIVE A MOTORBIKE IN LAOS?
Others then guide books, we do not separate the year in high season or low season. Riding a motorbike in Laos is special any time you come. Just prepare yourself for the difference in temperature, road condition and weather.
We prepare each request according to the season of the tour departure.
13. RAINY SEASON! CAN I RIDE A MOTORBIKE IN LAOS STILL?
Actually,…YES, of course, why not? This season, the green season in Laos, brings so much fun and adventure you will otherwise miss out on. The green season is not rainy every day and all day. Especially the landscape has a completely different feel, colour, smell if you get served some rain along the way…and routes will be adjusted by accessibility, of course. Just ask our team to give you advise, ideas and suggestions on the routes for either season.
14. WHAT DO I EAT ON THE TOURS?
Good question. It will most likely be a lot of Lao food. And certainly some very interesting food from time to time… Depending on your request, we can include or exclude meals on the tours. Lao food has a wide range of specialties that you should try, but if you better stick to noodle soups and crackers, up to you.
Places like Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha and Nong Khiaw, Vang Vieng all support a good range of western food, just in case you feel like it.
Some of our motor bike tours in northern Laos involve staying in remote villages with no restaurants at all. Especially for these days we will arrange for a family to prepare a meal for us.
15. HOW CAN I PAY FOR MY MOTORBIKING TOUR IN LAOS?
We ask you to pay the full amount of the tour before arrival. If not agreed differently, as there is also other ways to arrange the payment. In some cases we agree to make a deposit and then collect the remaining balance in cash on arrival day. Credit card payments do work only once you are here, and cost an additional amount of 3 %. ON Paypal we charge you 5% on top of the rate, as we can not extract money easily here in Laos (yet).
